Back To School... The Healthiest Way

For those of you who AREN’T shopping for the labor day parties, Burning Man, or that last summer vacation….. how about back to school supplies? Back to school shopping is a great time to “healthify” your house!

However, the problem with many of the school supplies on the market is that they’re often harmful to the environment and some may even be toxic. The making and production of many of these items release countless nasty chemicals into the air. Wasteful packaging is another issue. Not to mention everything that gets thrown away at the end of each school year. For example, plastic binders, chewed up pencils, dried out markers, and broken crayons. Some can’t be reused and most of them can’t even be recycled.

Even worse, though, toxic chemicals like phthalates, lead, and BPA, have been found in children’s school supplies. These toxins have been linked to cancer, birth defects, and harmful effects on the developing brain (1, 2). We want our kids to have the best learning environment - and supplies is no place to skimp! So, if you’re shopping for school items, let’s take a look at some options that will have a lesser impact on the earth and that are safer for your kids. There are tons of great products on the market, but who has the time to weed through each product?  We do!  Here is our list of products:

School Lunches

Packing school lunches can lead to tons of waste. That’s why we recommend reusable containers. It’s difficult to know, though, the difference between BPA-free, BPS-free, phthalates, etc that can be found in many of these products. We have just the right picks for you - so you don’t have to any work to figure out what to get!  Here are a few of our favorites:

Perfect Attendance

Make sure your kids don’t miss a day of school by keeping your medicine cabinet stocked with products to help keep the germs away and their immune systems strong.

Classroom Supplies

Eco-friendly school supplies have a lesser impact on the Earth and are safer for your kids.

Here’s to a great (and healthy) school year for everyone!
